    The Role of Expectation–Reality Discrepancy in Service Contracts

    Service contracts are common practice in some industries while being eliminated in others. To investigate this phenomenon, we identify expectation–reality discrepancy (ERD) as a key determinant. A provider\u27s ERD is defined as consumers’ ex-ante expected valuation minus their ex-post realized valuation of the provider\u27s service. Our analysis reveals that providers’ contract strategies critically depend on their ERDs rather than the true service valuations. A provider with a higher ERD is more likely to enforce contracts, regardless of whether the true service valuation is higher than that of the competitor. Providers should enforce contracts only when they have positive ERDs. Furthermore, contracts have a competition-intensifying effect: when providers enforce contracts, their competition on promoting consumer expectations through marketing efforts is intensified, leading to higher ERDs with contracts than without contracts. Finally, consumers and society as a whole may benefit from higher switching costs because positive ERDs may mislead consumers to make wrong switching decisions and switching costs can help deter such switching behaviors

    Coordinating a Supply Chain With a Manufacturer-Owned Online Channel: A Dual Channel Model Under Price Competition

    We consider a dual channel supply chain in which a manufacturer sells a single product to end-users through both a traditional retail channel and a manufacturer-owned direct online channel. We adopt a commonly used linear demand substitution model in which the mean demand in each channel is a function of the prices in each channel.We model each channel as a news vendor problem, with price and order quantity as decision variables. In addition, the manufacturer must choose the wholesale price to charge to the independent retailer. We analyze the optimal decisions for each channel and prove the existence of a unique equilibrium for the system. We compare this equilibrium solution to the solution for an integrated system, in which the manufacturer owns both the online store and the retailer. To enable supply chain coordination, we propose two contract schemes: a modified revenue-sharing contract and gain/loss sharing contract. We show that, in cases where the retail channel has a larger market than the online channel, such contracts enable the manufacturer to maintain price discrimination, selling the products in different channels at different prices. Finally, we perform a comprehensive numerical study to consider the impact of the model parameters on the equilibrium and to demonstrate the performance of the proposed coordination contracts. We conclude that coordination is most critical for products which are highly price sensitive and for systems in which the online and traditional retail channels are not viewed as close substitutes

    Intramuscular vitamin A injection in newborn lambs enhances antioxidant capacity and improves meat quality

    IntroductionVitamin A (VA) and its metabolite, retinoic acid (RA) possess several biological functions. This report investigated whether neonatal intramuscular VA injection affected antioxidative activity and meat quality in longissimus dorsi (LD) muscle of lambs.MethodsLambs were injected with 0 (control) or 7,500 IU VA palmitate into the biceps femoris muscle on day 2 after birth. At 3, 12, and 32 weeks of age, blood samples were collected in the jugular vein for serum levels of RA and muscle samples were collected in the biceps femoris for analysis of relative mRNA expression of enzyme contributors to retinoid metabolism. All animals were harvested at 32 weeks of age and muscle samples were collected to explore the role of VA on the meat quality and antioxidant capacity of lambs.Results and discussionOur results indicated that VA increased the redness, crude protein, and crude fat (p < 0.05), without affecting moisture, ash, and amino acid composition in LD muscle (p > 0.05). In addition, VA increased catalase (CAT) activity and decreased malondialdehyde (MDA) levels in LD muscle (p < 0.05). Meanwhile, greater levels of CAT and NRF2 mRNA and protein contents with VA treatment were observed in LD muscle (p < 0.05), partly explained by the increased level of RA (p < 0.05). Collectively, our findings indicated that VA injection at birth could improve lamb meat quality by elevating the redness, crude protein, crude fat, and antioxidative capacity in LD muscle of lambs

    Wideband Power Spectrum Sensing: a Fast Practical Solution for Nyquist Folding Receiver

    The limited availability of spectrum resources has been growing into a critical problem in wireless communications, remote sensing, and electronic surveillance, etc. To address the high-speed sampling bottleneck of wideband spectrum sensing, a fast and practical solution of power spectrum estimation for Nyquist folding receiver (NYFR) is proposed in this paper. The NYFR architectures is can theoretically achieve the full-band signal sensing with a hundred percent of probability of intercept. But the existing algorithm is difficult to realize in real-time due to its high complexity and complicated calculations. By exploring the sub-sampling principle inherent in NYFR, a computationally efficient method is introduced with compressive covariance sensing. That can be efficient implemented via only the non-uniform fast Fourier transform, fast Fourier transform, and some simple multiplication operations. Meanwhile, the state-of-the-art power spectrum reconstruction model for NYFR of time-domain and frequency-domain is constructed in this paper as a comparison. Furthermore, the computational complexity of the proposed method scales linearly with the Nyquist-rate sampled number of samples and the sparsity of spectrum occupancy. Simulation results and discussion demonstrate that the low complexity in sampling and computation is a more practical solution to meet the real-time wideband spectrum sensing applications

    Distributed UAV Swarm Augmented Wideband Spectrum Sensing Using Nyquist Folding Receiver

    Distributed unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) swarms are formed by multiple UAVs with increased portability, higher levels of sensing capabilities, and more powerful autonomy. These features make them attractive for many recent applica-tions, potentially increasing the shortage of spectrum resources. In this paper, wideband spectrum sensing augmented technology is discussed for distributed UAV swarms to improve the utilization of spectrum. However, the sub-Nyquist sampling applied in existing schemes has high hardware complexity, power consumption, and low recovery efficiency for non-strictly sparse conditions. Thus, the Nyquist folding receiver (NYFR) is considered for the distributed UAV swarms, which can theoretically achieve full-band spectrum detection and reception using a single analog-to-digital converter (ADC) at low speed for all circuit components. There is a focus on the sensing model of two multichannel scenarios for the distributed UAV swarms, one with a complete functional receiver for the UAV swarm with RIS, and another with a decentralized UAV swarm equipped with a complete functional receiver for each UAV element. The key issue is to consider whether the application of RIS technology will bring advantages to spectrum sensing and the data fusion problem of decentralized UAV swarms based on the NYFR architecture. Therefore, the property for multiple pulse reconstruction is analyzed through the Gershgorin circle theorem, especially for very short pulses. Further, the block sparse recovery property is analyzed for wide bandwidth signals. The proposed technology can improve the processing capability for multiple signals and wide bandwidth signals while reducing interference from folded noise and subsampled harmonics. Experiment results show augmented spectrum sensing efficiency under non-strictly sparse conditions

    A New Allele of the SPIKE1 Locus Reveals Distinct Regulation of Trichome and Pavement Cell Development and Plant Growth

    The single-celled trichomes of Arabidopsis thaliana have long served as an elegant model for elucidating the mechanisms of cell differentiation and morphogenesis due to their unique growth patterns. To identify new components in the genetic network that governs trichome development, we carried out exhaustive screens for additional Arabidopsis mutants with altered trichome morphology. Here, we report one mutant, aberrantly branched trichome1-1 (abt1-1), with a reduced trichome branching phenotype. After positional cloning, a point mutation in the SPIKE1 (SPK1) gene was identified in abt1-1. Further genetic complementation experiments confirmed that abt1-1 is a new allele of SPK1, so abt1-1 was renamed as spk1-7 according to the literatures. spk1-7 and two other spk1 mutant alleles, covering a spectrum of phenotypic severity, highlighted the distinct responses of developmental programs to different SPK1 mutations. Although null spk1 mutants are lethal and show defects in plant stature, trichome and epidermal pavement cell development, only trichome branching is affected in spk1-7. Surprisingly, we found that SPK1 is involved in the positioning of nuclei in the trichome cells. Lastly, through double mutant analysis, we found the coordinated regulation of trichome branching between SPK1 and two other trichome branching regulators, ANGUSTIFOLIA (AN) and ZWICHEL (ZWI). SPK1 might serve for the precise positioning of trichome nuclei, while AN and ZWI contribute to the formation of branch points through governing the cMTs dynamics. In summary, this study presented a fully viable new mutant allele of SPK1 and shed new light on the regulation of trichome branching and other developmental processes by SPK1

    A deep learning method for foot-type classification using plantar pressure images

    Background: Flat foot deformity is a prevalent and challenging condition often leading to various clinical complications. Accurate identification of abnormal foot types is essential for appropriate interventions.Method: A dataset consisting of 1573 plantar pressure images from 125 individuals was collected. The performance of the You Only Look Once v5 (YOLO-v5) model, improved YOLO-v5 model, and multi-label classification model was evaluated for foot type identification using the collected images. A new dataset was also collected to verify and compare the models.Results: The multi-label classification algorithm based on ResNet-50 outperformed other algorithms. The improved YOLO-v5 model with Squeeze-and-Excitation (SE), the improved YOLO-v5 model with Convolutional Block Attention Module (CBAM), and the multilabel classification model based on ResNet-50 achieved an accuracy of 0.652, 0.717, and 0.826, respectively, which is significantly higher than those obtained using the ordinary plantar-pressure system and the standard YOLO-v5 model.Conclusion: These results indicate that the proposed DL-based multilabel classification model based on ResNet-50 is superior in flat foot type detection and can be used to evaluate the clinical rehabilitation status of patients with abnormal foot types and various foot pathologies when more data on patients with various diseases are available for training
